1. What this software is

Threshold is a prototype recovery and overdose-prevention tool built for a hackathon. It identifies language and sensor signals that may be consistent with a possible medical emergency, and activates a response plan you configured in advance. That is a meaningfully different thing from a diagnosis, and we describe it that way on purpose.

2. What it is not

• It is not a substitute for emergency services, medical care, treatment, or a clinician.
• It does not detect overdoses reliably and must not be relied upon to do so.
• It does not guarantee that any alert reaches any person. Alerts depend on your device, your network, and your contacts' devices.
• It provides no legal advice. Information about Good Samaritan laws is a plain-language summary for orientation only.

3. The one thing you cannot turn off

You control the escalation ladder. You decide which of your contacts are told about which tiers. There is exactly one exception, and we state it here as plainly as we state it during onboarding: if the system believes you are in medical danger — Tier 4 or Tier 5 — it will alert your emergency contacts, regardless of your other settings. If that is not acceptable to you, do not use this software.

4. False alarms

The ladder is deliberately asymmetric: we would rather wake your sister unnecessarily than miss an overdose. This means false alarms will happen. You can rescind an alert in one tap, and doing so is never held against you.

5. Acceptable use

• Do not use Threshold to monitor another adult without their knowledge and consent. The product is built to make that difficult, and doing it anyway is a violation of these terms.
• Do not rely on it as the only safety measure for someone at risk.
• Do not use it to obtain dosing guidance. It will not provide any.

6. Accounts

You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure. Sign out when using a shared device, and do not share access to your recovery profile.

7. No warranty

This software is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. It is prototype software built under time constraint and has not undergone clinical validation, regulatory review, or a formal security audit.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the authors are not liable for any damages arising from use of, or inability to use, this software — including any failure to detect an emergency or deliver an alert.

9. Changes

We will post changes here with an updated date. Material changes to what the system discloses to your contacts will be surfaced in the app itself, not buried in this document.
